The Lions defeated their South African rivals The Sharks on Saturday afternoon to book a semi-final appearance against the Hurricanes in what will be a repeat of last year’s Super Rugby final.
The Sharks were heavy favourites going into this game but they came so close to losing to a side they have defeated all season when at halftime the Lions were down 14-3. However, they clawed themselves back in the second half but they needed a last minute penalty to secure victory in Johannesburg.
The Sharks were ahead by a point in the final minutes when the away side conceded a penalty for offside as Lwazi Mvovo tackled an opposition player in an offside position. Mvovo really should have done better to get back into the line – a lazy penalty to give away.

The Sharks could be forgiven for thinking that it would be unlikely for the Lions to score three points from around 58 metres out but that’s exactly what Ruan Combrinck did as he landed a monster penalty in an incredibly high-pressure situation.
The Lions held onto the ball in the final two minutes to setup a clash in the same ground next Saturday. They will need to improve on today’s showing if they are to have a chance against Beauden Barrett and co.
