How The PRO14 Playoff Race Looks With Just Two Rounds Remaining

There are just two regular season rounds remaining in this season’s Guinness PRO14 campaign and the race for a coveted playoff position looks set to go down to the wire.

The top three teams in each conference qualify for the PRO14 playoffs.

In terms of European qualification, the three highest ranked European sides from each conference will qualify for the Champions Cup (South African sides are currently not eligible). The final spot will go to the winner of a single playoff match between the next highest ranked European Club in Conference A and the next highest ranked European Club in Conference B.

Below you will find the current Conference A and Conference B tables and the subsequent playoff matchups, as it stands.

PRO14 Playoff For Final European Spot As It Stands

Cardiff Blues v Edinburgh

Conference A

Glasgow Warriors and Munster have already secured the two top spots in Conference A but the battle for first looks set to go down to the wire with just three points separating the sides.

Both sides secured bonus point wins at the weekend and both face into tricky ties next weekend with Glasgow travelling to the RDS to take on Leinster and Munster going to Italy to play Benetton.

A win for either side here could prove the telling blow in the race for first.

Glasgow Warriors (71 pts) Remaining Fixtures: Leinster (A), Edinburgh (H)

Munster (68 pts) Remaining Fixtures: Benetton (A), Connacht (H)

The race for the final spot is the most interesting as Connacht, Cardiff Blues and Ospreys are all within a shout.

However, with Connacht and the Cardiff Blues set to face off in Galway next weekend, a win for Andy Friend’s side will secure third place before their final fixture.

Connacht (56 pts) Remaining Fixtures: Cardiff Blues (H), Munster (A)

Cardiff Blues (52 pts) Remaining Fixtures: Connacht (A), Ospreys (H)

Ospreys (49 pts) Remaining Fixtures: Southern Kings (A), Cardiff Blues (A)

Conference B

Leinster have long secured top spot in Conference B and with that, a home semi-final. There are three teams still battling it out for second and third spots while Scarlets are still within a shout mathematically, although it’s unlikely.

The main focus will be on Ulster, Benetton and Edinburgh who lie in second, third and fourth respectively.

Ulster (54 pts) Remaining Fixtures: Edinburgh (A), Leinster (H)

Benetton (52 pts) Remaining Fixtures: Munster (H), Zebre (A)

Edinburgh (51 pts) Remaining Fixtures: Ulster (H), Glasgow Warriors (A)

All three teams will believe that they are in control of their own destiny and that two wins from their final two games will secure a playoff spot which makes for a fascinating end to the campaign in Conference B.
