Mathieu Bastareaud has been left out of France’s 37-man World Cup training squad as head coach Jacques Brunel revealed his selection today.
According to reports, Bastareaud’s exclusion is at the behest of incoming head coach Fabien Galthie who will take over from Brunel after the 2019 World Cup.
The powerful centre was vice-captain throughout the Six Nations which makes his absence all the more shocking but he isn’t the only high-profile name who has been left out.
Scrum-half Morgan Parra and winger Teddy Thomas have also been excluded.
There are three uncapped players in the squad; props Peato Mauvaka and Emerick Setiano and Clermont winger Alivereti Raka.
At the World Cup, France will take on Argentina, England, Tonga and the United States in Pool C.
The squad will convene for training on June 25th with those involved in the Top 14 playoffs to join up on July 1st and those involved in the Top 13 final, which was played on Saturday, to begin preparations on July 6th.
