Four Champions Cups, a Challenge Cup and three PRO14 titles – Isa Nacewa will go down as one of the greatest ever players to wear the famous blue shirt of Leinster and is undoubtedly, the best import ever to play for the eastern province.
The end of his career couldn’t have been more perfect as he captained his side to a Champions Cup and PRO14 double – so many players retire without finishing on their own terms but for Nacewa, you couldn’t write a better script.
The deafening chants of ‘Isa, Isa, Isa’ which engulfed the RDS and the Aviva Stadium during the last two weeks are just a small indication of the esteem he is held by the Leinster faithful.
For now, the Leinster chapter is now closed as Nacewa returns to New Zealand with his young family. The 35-year-old has penned a touching letter to Leinster supporters on the club’s official website, an extract of which you can find below.
“And of course I’ll miss the supporters. You have all stuck with me and with us.
“The journey hasn’t been about this season either. It hasn’t always been about medals. It’s been about Thomond Park in 2011. It’s been about Connacht in 2016. It’s been about six European debuts against Bath when the world outside of the four walls of the RDS was against us. It’s been about Clermont in 2017.
“Because there have to be down days, and there will again, but you are supporting a team and a group of players that are extremely proud of who and what they represent.
“Never forget that.”
