Three members of the 2019 U20 Grand Slam winning side have been included in the Ireland Men’s Sevens Development squad for this week’s Dubai Invitational tournament.
Ireland’s men’s and women’s senior sides are already in Dubai preparing for the beginning of the HSBC World Series with action getting underway on Thursday. For the men’s side this will be the first time they are competing on the world series as a fully-fledged member after securing qualification in Hong Kong earlier this year.
For the invitational tournament which also begins on Thursday, this provides an opportunity for Director of Women’s and Sevens Rugby, Anthony Eddy, and Ireland’s Women’s head coach, Stan McDowell, to run the rule over those who may be contention to secure a spot on the senior side for the season ahead.
The men’s invitational squad includes U20 Grand Slam trio Liam Turner, Iwan Hughes and Rob Russell. Exciting Ulster Academy winger Aaron Sexton is also included.
In the women’s development squad, Enya Breen will get an opportunity to impress after recently lining out for Ireland in the November international against Wales at UCD last month.
Anna McGann, Lucinda Kinghan and Dorothy Wall, who all have sevens caps to their name, have been included while Grace Moore and Soneva Scott will also hope to feature after coming through the IRFU’s IQ Rugby programme.
“The International Invitational Tournament is always a good competition as many Unions have their national development teams represented,” Eddy said.
“It is a great opportunity for the players to be exposed to the quality competition and put their hand up for further representation with the World Series squads.
“Both squads have prepared well and will be looking for a good performance over the three days.”
