Director of Ireland Sevens Anthony Eddy has named a 13-man squad for this weekend’s London 7s (Sky Sports Arena) in Twickenham which features three uncapped players.
Ireland will participate in two World Series events in the coming weeks as an invitational side, London this weekend and then Paris next week.
Eddy’s side will be on the circuit full-time next season after they secured qualification at the Hong Kong 7s in early April.
The two events in London and Paris provide the perfect opportunity for Ireland to compete with the best in the world before Olympic qualification takes place in July.
Among the 13-man squad who will travel to Twickenham, three are uncapped and these include Jack Daly, Jack Kelly and Peter Sullivan included.
Daly is back-row from Castleisland, Co. Kerry who has recently finished his first year in the Munster Academy while Kelly is in the Leinster Academy but has already played PRO14 rugby with the senior side this season.
Sullivan, formerly of the Leinster Academy, has had a standout season with AIL side Lansdowne and finished the season as the league’s top try scorer.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Anthony Eddy said:
“To win the tournament in Hong Kong and secure a place on next season’s World Series was a great outcome for all the hard work many players have contributed over a short time.
“It is great to have the opportunity in London and Paris to test ourselves against the top sides in the world as we build towards the Rugby Europe Olympic Qualification tournament in July.
“We’ll be up against quality opposition in our pool, so it will be a real challenge, particularly as core teams are fighting for a Top 4 position to secure Olympic qualification through the series.”
