Eddie Jones Was Blunt When Asked About Christian Wade’s England Omission

It’s a sticking point for a lot of people. Christian Wade has had a phenomenal season for Wasps where he became the top try scorer in the Premiership.

There, of course, is a lot more to playing on the wing than just scoring tries. You have to be astute defensively, be competent under a high ball and have excellent positional and tactical awareness. Wade is often considered as a ‘flair’ player, one who undoubtedly has an excellent finishing ability but sometimes shirks from his defensive responsibilities.

Andy Goode, recently writing in his column for Pundit Arena, can’t understand how Eddie Jones continues to overlook the flying Wasps winger for England selection.

“I know this is said a lot in rugby terms but he’s got something that no other player has in terms of his finishing ability – his power, his ability to get through holes and just skin people, it’s second to none,” Goode said in his column.

For Wade, he will undoubtedly be disappointed that he has been overlooked yet again for England selection but Jones has revealed that there are certain parts to his game that are just not up to Test level.

“He’s not a selection issue for me, he might be for you guys. There are certain parts of his game that I don’t think is up to Test level and that’s my opinion.”

Jones also seems to have an issue with Wade’s comments in the media about his omission.

“He talks about it a lot in the papers so I’ll let him talk about it.”

For Wade, you would imagine he is aware of the areas of the game where he needs to improve in order for Jones to consider him for selection. Unfortunately for him, being a key member of a Wasps squad who reached a Premiership final did not yield those aspects of his game, in Jones’ eyes at least.
