This is exactly what Saracens and England supporters did not want to be confirmed.
Saracens have just released a statement whereby they have confirmed that Maro Itoje has suffered a fractured jaw. Itoje picked up the injury in his side’s loss to Harlequins at the weekend where he was removed from the field of play after 48 minutes.
A scan confirmed the severity of the injury but there is currently no timeline for his return as Itoje will see a further specialist during the week where it is hoped that once this consultation takes place, the recovery period for the towering 22-year-old will be confirmed.
It will come as a huge blow to both Mark McCall and Eddie Jones who see Itoje as a crucial component in their respective teams.
Saracens have now lost five consecutive games and face into the unenviable task of taking on Clermont Auvergne in the Champions Cup this weekend while Jones would have been relying on Itoje to help his side to secure a third successive Six Nations championship.
Here is the full statement from Saracens:
Scans have confirmed that Saracens forward Maro Itoje fractured his jaw in Sunday’s Round 10 Aviva Premiership clash against Harlequins.
The 23-year old England forward left the field in the 48th minute of Saracens’ 20-19 defeat at the Twickenham Stoop and was taken to hospital where scans confirmed the fracture.
Itoje will now see a second specialist later this week to confirm his return to play schedule.
