It may have somewhat gone under the radar but the extension of Leo Cullen and Stuart Lancaster’s contracts at Leinster is an incredible boost to the club going forward.
The duo have masterminded the transformation of Leinster into one of the top sides in Europe and their double achievement last year which saw them lift the Guinness PRO14 and Heineken Champions Cup titles is a feat which we may not see repeated for some time.
Lancaster’s influence at this stage is well known, with the players continuously praising the former England head coach for the impact he has had on the province.
Jack Conan, who made his senior debut under previous head coach Matt O’Connor, has seen the impact that Cullen and subsequently, Lancaster, have made since they took up their respective roles with the club.
“Yeah, massively,” Conan said when asked whether their extensions was a boost to the playing group.
“The success the two lads have had in the last few years has been incredible and they’re massively pivotal parts of this club and the environment. Stuart has come in and fitted in seamlessly. He has been incredible and his level of knowledge and detail as a rugby coach is second to none. The way he wants to play the game is something that suits us so perfectly with the talent and ability we have in the squad.
“To get the two lads signing on is huge and please God, they’ll stay around for many more years to come and we’ll have a lot more success with them.”
Cullen also spoke this week about his delight at agreeing on an extension until the end of the 2020/21 season.
“Yeah, delighted and honoured really to be asked to stay on first and foremost,” Cullen said.
“It’s not something I ever take for granted. I’m sure there are lots of people who would love to do this job. For me, I do feel very privileged that I’m in the position that I’m in. The club have shown quite a lot of faith in me which I will always be appreciative of.”
