39 Phases! Falcons Eke Out Superb Win In Grandstand Finish

Newcastle Falcons celebrate

The Newcastle Falcons have made it back-to-back wins in the Heineken Champions Cup after defeating Montpellier 23-20 at Kingston Park this afternoon.

Gary Graham’s first-half try and 11 points from the boot of the excellent Joel Hodgson in the first half gave the Falcons a 16-6 lead at the break.

In the second interval, it was all Montpellier and they dominated possession to get back into the game through a try from Paul Willemse and three penalties from the boot of Ruan Pienaar.

This gave the French side a 16-20 lead and when Falcons’ Logovi’i Mulipola was sent to the bin with just five minutes of the game remaining, it seemed like a victory would be out of grasp.

However, Dean Richards’ side secured some territory and after 39 draining and gruelling phases, Callum Chick bundled over from a metre out to send the home support into raptures.
