Leinster showed grit and determination worthy of true champions to overcome a spirited Ulster side and progress to this year’s RaboDirect Pro12 Final at the RDS. In the post match press conference, Matt O’Connor admitted that both Jimmy Gopperth and Ian Madigan could get starting berths for the final following some great link-up play.
Despite going behind by nine points late into the second half and losing talisman Brian O’Driscoll to injury, Matt O’Connor’s Leinster side displayed courage in the face of adversity and defeated Ulster 13-9.
The game was full of talking points, as Leinster once again were slow starters and went through periods of indiscipline and inability. A major turning point was the introduction of Ian Madigan, who went on to score the match-winning try. Matt O’Connor was quick to acknowledge the combined contribution of both Gopperth and Madigan, admitting that there is room for both on the teamsheet for the final.
“They could (both start). Ian (Madigan) has played a lot of footy at twelve and part of the reason that he’s on the bench for us is because of the versatility that he’s got. It’s a pretty special break that changes the game and he’s been on the verge of delivering that all year.
“I’m very pleased for him that he finally got the opportunity and took it. It made the world of difference.”
Leinster face Glasgow in the final in two weeks time, where they will look to become the first side to retain the Pro12.
