Hosts Japan scored their first try of the 2019 Rugby World Cup in style as a beautiful offload from Timothy Lafaele set up Kotaro Matsushima to cross the line.
Japan had found themselves behind against Russia early in the game when their full-back William Tupuo failed to take a high ball and Kirill Golosnitskiy followed in to score the tournament’s first try.
They hit back however in brilliant fashion moments later after a stunning offload from Lafaele allowed the ball to find Matsushima on the wing who got his side back into the game.
Yu Tamura may have missed the resulting conversion but the score was crucial in getting Japan back into the game.
Japan won three of their four games at the Rugby World Cup in 2015, this after winning just once in 24 attempts during their previous seven World Cup campaigns drawing two and losing 21.
Russia are appearing in their second Rugby World Cup campaign; they lost all four games at the 2011 tournament by an average margin of 35 points.
