Chris Farrell Ruled Out Of Russia Clash With Concussion

Ireland centre Chris Farrell will miss Ireland’s upcoming Pool A clash with Russia on Thursday after suffering a concussion in the defeat to Japan.

Farrell was replaced around the 60th minute mark of Ireland’s disappointing defeat to the hosts on Saturday and has not recovered from his concussion in time for Thursday’s game.

The Munster man was one of three Irish players to suffer head injuries in the Japan game including Tadhg Furlong and Rob Kearney.

Furlong passed his HIA1 during the loss to Japan and is available for selection on Thursday while Rob Kearney, who failed the same test on Saturday, passed HIA2 and will be fit should he pass HIA3.

Farrell’s injury means that Joe Schmidt may find himself slightly short in the midfield area with Robbie Henshaw still a doubt for Thursday.

“Robbie ran really well yesterday but we’ll obviously have to take a view on his selection when we get back to training tomorrow,” said Ireland assistant coach Simon Easterby.

“But he’s doing really well, we’re really pleased with his progress.”

Connacht centre Bundee Aki however, is likely to return to the starting XV after he missed the Japan game due to a head injury he sustained in the win against Scotland.

Schmidt also suffered another injury blow recently with the news that number eight Jack Conan is out of the tournament with a foot fracture.

Ulster’s Jordi Murphy will travel to Japan to take his place in the squad.

“Unfortunately, Jack Conan had to leave and it’s a real blow,” said Easterby.

“I think he has come on hugely in the last 12 months, not just at provincial level but at international level.

“He’s a quality rugby player who can break the game up. He’s a bit of a freak with the ball in hand so it’s a real loss to the group, but we are very fortunate that Jordi Murphy will be joining us. He gives us great coverage, he’s been in the squad for a number of years, and he has played in some big games.

“He can cover every position in the back row, which obviously gives us a good deal of flexibility across that back row with things starting to ramp up a little bit.

“As we go through the tournament, guys will pick up bumps and niggles. It’s great to have Jordi coming in and he’ll slot straight in this week.”
