Huw Jones The Shock Exclusion As Scotland Name World Cup Squad

Huw Jones is the shock exclusion from the Scotland squad officially announced by Gregor Townsend earlier today.

The Glasgow Warriors centre has scored 10 tries in 22 international appearances but has ultimately paid the price after a recent dip in form.

Jones made an impressive start to his Test career with Scotland scoring notable tries in some big games but he has not been as explosive over the past year which has cost him dearly.

Other notable exclusions include fellow centre Rory Hutchinson as well as forwards Josh Strauss, Matt Ferguson and Magnus Bradbury.

Gregor Townsend spoke of the difficulty he had in whittling his squad down to just 31.

“It’s been a tough process getting down to 31 players, but we are happy with the squad we’ve selected,” Townsend told the media.

Edinburgh hooker Stuart McInally has been named captain for the tournament in Japan as Scotland get their World Cup up and running with a tough pool match with Joe Schmidt’s Ireland.

McInally expressed his delight at being chosen to captain the squad after having missed out through injury in 2015.

“I was injured for the last World Cup, so this makes it sweeter,” McInally said.

“It was a very proud moment when I was asked to be captain.”

Adam Hastings has been named in the squad as cover for Finn Russell at out-half.
