RC Toulon secured a gritty 26 – 20 victory over La Rochelle on Saturday, thrusting them up the Top 14 table and into a position that now sees them lurking just behind the top three as the league nears the half-way point.
The former European giants have started the season with a real sense of renewal this term and, with acquisitions such as Malakai Fekitoa and Chris Ashton giving the giants from the south coast more weapons to their arsenal.
Leading their Atlantic coast counterparts 20 – 6 at the break, Toulon survived a spirited second-half comeback in order to secure the points and in doing, drawing them level with La Rochelle and Bordeaux just behind Toulouse and within striking distance of Lyon and Montpellier, who site atop the current standings.
In game that sported many a domestic and foreign star, it was 23-year-old Fijian Josua Tuisova that gave fans the highlight of the game, a barreling demolition of the La Rochelle defensive line early in the second half.
Having come on off the right wing, Tuisova took the ball inside his own ten metre line where, from there, he attacked from deep and made rag dolls of La Rochelle’s centre pairing of Geoffery Doumayrou and Paul Jordaan.

Despite being finally dragged to the ground inside the La Rochelle 22-metre line, it was yet another reminder that the young Fijian winger is a serious threat this season.
With three starts and four tries already to his name, this latest installment of France’s top tier league could be the one that sees Tuisova become one of Toulon’s big names.
With moments like this one against La Rochelle, not many would bet against him.
