Shane Williams’ Assessment Of Pro12 Revamp Is As Scathing As They Come

The future landscape of Guinness Pro12 league is still something of a mystery as clubs, players and fans are still no closer to knowing just how many teams will contest the forthcoming season or even what fixtures lie in wait for them.

A mere month out from the start of the 2017/18 campaign and there is still no fixture list. Additionally, there isn’t even any certainty about how many clubs will take part in the new season.

With departing South African Super Rugby sides the Cheetahs and the Southern Kings are due to join the northern hemisphere competition. However, as new sides come on board it appears that Italian side Zebre are looking to bail on the former Celtic League.

What started out as an exciting adventure to expand the league has now quickly turned into a calamitous mess.

So, when Wales Legend Shane Williams wrote in The Rugby Paper that the whole situation is ‘shambolic’, people really shouldn’t be too surprised.

Reported by Ruck, Williams, who played over 140 games with the Ospreys, many of which were in the Pro12, is not impressed.

“It’s a complete mess and it’s a situation the league just doesn’t need right now.

“I’m all for trying something different and bringing in new teams, but the way it’s been done by the organisers has just been shambolic. Who is in charge of all of this?

“As we head into August we still don’t know the fixture list for the new season and that can’t be doing anyone involved any good at all.”

With no end to the confusion in sight and with time ticking away relentlessly before the start of the new Pro12 season in five weeks time, clubs and players must surely be growing increasingly concerned about the lack of clarity the looming season holds.
