Ireland are facing a fitness headache with four key players carrying injury doubts as the start of the Six Nations gets ever closer.
Robbie Henshaw, Tadhg Furlong, Jimmy O’Brien, and Tommy O’Brien all picked up knocks during Leinster’s Champions Cup victory over Bayonne, leaving questions over their availability for Ireland.
Henshaw went down with a knee injury in the 34th minute, while wing Tommy O’Brien pulled up with a calf strain just after half-time.
Full-back Jimmy O’Brien was substituted late in the game due to a hamstring issue, and prop Tadhg Furlong also picked up a calf problem. Leinster’s initial assessment suggests most of these are soft-tissue injuries, but final decisions on their fitness will only be made after further checks this week ahead of Saturday’s URC clash with Connacht at Dexcom Stadium.
The timing is far from ideal for Ireland, with head coach Andy Farrell due to announce his Six Nations squad this Wednesday. While there is hope all four players will make the cut, Leinster’s latest update will be closely scrutinised as Farrell weighs his options.
There is better news elsewhere in the squad. Ciarán Frawley and Jack Conan are both fit and set to feature against Connacht, providing some reassurance in the backline. Meanwhile, Hugo Keenan (hip) and Jamie Osborne (shoulder) continue their recoveries from serious injuries, though neither is likely to be ready for the start of the tournament.
Ireland’s injury concerns don’t just include Leinster players; the front row also faces challenges. Connacht tighthead Finlay Bealham remains sidelined, while Leinster and Ireland prop Andrew Porter, who can cover both loosehead and tighthead, is expected to miss the opening round against France on 5th February.
Paddy McCarthy, who partnered Porter in the November internationals, is also out with a foot injury, leaving Ireland with limited options at prop ahead of their Six Nations opener.
As Farrell finalises his squad, Leinster will be closely monitoring the injured quartet this week, hoping for positive updates.
The assessments will be crucial in shaping Ireland’s backline and front-row options, with fitness likely to play a decisive role in the early stages of the tournament.
The Six Nations kicks off in just over two weeks, and any late injury setbacks could force Farrell into difficult last-minute decisions, making every recovery vital.
