Ellis Genge has hit out those who accused him of eye-gouging Francois Hougaard during Leicester Tigers’ loss to Wasps at the weekend.
Leicester captain Genge lost his cool at Hougaard during the Tigers’ first loss of the season, as he shoved the Wasps winger in the face, before also pulling him by the hair.
Genge was shown a yellow card for the incident, as referee Thomas Foley deemed the Leicester prop’s reaction to be unwarranted.
The Leicester captain was speaking to The Guardian about the incident and insisted that he had no intention of eye-gouging the former South African international.
Ellis Genge on the incident with Francois Hougaard.
“A lot of people have said I tried to gouge him. That’s absolutely ridiculous. I’d never even dream of doing something like that. That’s disgusting,” Genge said.
“But, yeah, I lost my head and pushed him in the face a bit. It potentially cost us the game, being down to 14 men for that length of time. I’ll learn from it.
