Sale Sharks’ superb win over Gloucester has been overshadowed by a post-match confrontation.
The English Premiership side defeated Gloucester 30-15, moving seven points behind them into fifth.
Sale Sharks Director of Rugby, Steve Diamond, spoke to the media in the post-match press conference. Journalist Sam Peters, working on behalf of The Sunday Times, was present in the press pool but did not ask any questions of the victorious Sale boss.
Afterwards, Diamond confronted Peters over an article the latter wrote in September, partially titled ‘Steve Diamond continues to look out of touch with the modern game‘, in which he criticises Diamond’s approach to head injury assessments and to rugby in general.
Steve Diamond: “You not asking me any questions?”
Sam Peters: “No, I don’t need quotes.”
SD: “No? No? What a pack of lies you wrote about me.”
SP: “Where was the lie.”
SD: “Loads of them. Talking about HIAs.”
SP: “I heard them with my own ears.”
SD: “No you didn’t.”
SP: “Then why didn’t your legal department get in touch?”
SD: “Let’s go outside and have a proper chat.”
After initial hesitation, Peters agreed. Outside of the press room, Peters alleges that Diamond grabbed the dictaphone he left on in case of assault taking place, with Diamond heard saying “You fucking shithouse” before the recording ends.
Peters then claimed that Diamond took a different approach, making him out to be the aggressor instead.
The end of the row was caught by The Telegraph, with Diamond waving him off as a clearly irate Peters calls him a bully.
Peters’ article in The Independent on the incident is well worth checking out for full context.
