Mourad Boudjellal is reportedly interested in buying Olympique Marseille.

A number of months ago the first reports emerged of Mourad Boudjellal’s rumoured interest in buying French Ligue 1 side, Olympique Marseille. At the time, many simply dismissed such speculation as being yet another crazy story to emerge from Toulon.

Given that those reports coincided with Toulon’s application to join the Aviva Premiership, it was easy to simply reject such speculation as an over hyped rumour. However it would now appear that Boudjellal is at least considering taking over the former Champions League winners.

In an interview with La Provence, the Toulon owner claimed that Marseille had ‘monstrous economic potential’ that needed to be ‘exploited’, before outlining a future vision for the club,

This club can again play a leading role, the average attendances will go up sharply. TV rights also, as in pro football, they are awarded on a meritocratic system.

There will be much more economic partners because the medial relative to OM will be stronger.

It is a pattern that must be put in place. For me, the first that come to compete PSG wins….

Marseille has economic potential and can benefit from unconventional marketing.

Not only in France but throughout the world. It is the only club that can compete with PSG

Although Boudjellal denied that he was interested in buying the mid table French club at the conclusion of the interview, throughout the article he consistently associated himself with Marseille.

Indeed, from the tone of the article it would at least suggest that Boudjellal is considering the possibility of buying the struggling football team.

Perhaps the biggest hint came after Boudjellal said, ‘We must take risks by focusing on future products. We can recruit based on the economy future results will bring’.
