Toulon very publicly applied to join the Premiership.
When Mourad Boudjellal announced that Toulon had made an application to join the Premiership, very few believed that we would be seeing the French giants play in England any time soon.
Nevertheless, Premiership Rugby chiefs refused to dismiss Boudjellal bid, instead they simply stated, ‘It is too early to give a formal response but we will give it due consideration and we will respond’.
Indeed Boudjellal was keen to stress that the move was ‘not just a provocation’, arguing that ‘the economic future is better in England than in France, given how the two leagues are run’.
Although little has developed since then, Boudjellal today answered questions in English on Canal + ahead of Toulon’s clash with Stade Francais.
Given the way Boudjellal tends to operate, such a move could viewed in any number of ways, from merely attempting to keep his application in the public sphere to a hint that Toulon may indeed find themselves playing in the Premiership.
