Tennis Player Genie Bouchard Goes On Date With Fan After Superbowl Twitter Bet Backfires

A Superbowl bet made on Twitter led to Canadian tennis player Eugenie Bouchard agreeing to go on a date with a fan.

With the Atlanta Falcons cruising 21-3 at the time and looking on course to bring home the Vince Lombardi Trophy, the 22-year-old felt suitably confident to agree to a date with a random stranger if the New England Patriots were to do the unthinkable and turn it around:

Of course, what happened next was that the Patriots pulled off the biggest Superbowl comeback of all time, running out 34-28 winners in overtime after clawing back a 19-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

Many wondered if the 2014 Wimbledon finalist would front up and accept the forfeit or simply throw her phone into the nearest river. They soon received their answer:

Bouchard has since gone on the date, as shown by her posts on social media. Bouchard and John went to a Brooklyn Nets game, where (presumably) there were no more bets made as to the result.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Bouchard told Sports Illustrated (as quoted by the Mirror):

“I want to honor my word and stay true to it, so I’m going on that date and that’s actually tonight.

“We’re going to go to the Brooklyn Nets game. He’s flying in this afternoon, so I look forward to meeting him tonight and I hope he enjoys it. And I hope it’s not too awkward.”

“After all the media attention it got, it was something I could, first of all, not back out of. There was no chance..

“I was worried, however, when I looked at his Twitter profile as soon as I lost the bet and his profile picture was a picture of Tiger Woods. I was like, ‘It’s one of those Twitter fans. I don’t even know what he looks like. What is going to happen?’

“But it turns out he seems to be a very nice boy.”
