Eleven nominees have made the shortlist for the RTÉ Sports Awards 2018 ‘Team of the Year’ which is set to be decided by public vote with the winner being announced during the awards ceremony on Saturday.
With Grand Slam titles, World Cup finals, and 45-year famines, 2018 was a monumental year for Irish sport.
Picking the winner of the ‘Team of the Year’ award is one of the toughest selections in history considering some of the heights reached throughout 2018 in a variety of different disciplines.
The nominees are as followed…
The Rebellettes won their fourth All-Ireland title in five years in 2018 completing back-to-back wins after an injury-time score defeated Kilkenny by a single point.
Stephen Kenny’s charges were dominant throughout this season’s League of Ireland campaign completing the double with victory over close rivals Cork City in the FAI Cup final. The league title is also Dundalk’s fourth success in five seasons.
Ireland Eventing Equestrian
The Irish eventing team claimed silver at the World Equestrian Games marking the first time an Irish side has ever medalled in the event. Their victory also ensured qualification for Tokyo 2020.
With the fourth All-Ireland win in a row, ‘The Dubs’ looked as dominant as ever throughout their league and championship-winning run, eventually overcoming a tough Tyrone side in September’s final.
John Kiely’s charges ended a 45-year wait for a Liam MacCarthy cup with victory over defending champions Galway back in August. In what was arguably the best summer in hurling in history, the Treatymen stood out from start to finish.
Dublin Ladies Footballers
After winning their first National League ever in 2018, the Dublin ladies picked up where they left off in 2017 claiming their second All-Ireland crown in a row.
Irish Paralympic Athletics Team
The Irish team stood out at the 2018 World Para Athletics European Championships in Berlin, winning nine medals from seven different athletes, including six gold medals.
Gary & Paul O’Donovan
The legendary brothers claimed Gold at the 2018 World Rowing Championships having already secured silver at the European championships a month prior.
Ireland Rugby Team
The greatest year in Irish Rugby history saw Joe Schmidt’s men claim only a third ever Grand Slam title, which was backed up by a first series win in Australia since 1979. The team also excelled throughout the November series winning all four games including a monumental victory over New Zealand, the first on home soil in Ireland’s history.
Leinster Rugby Team
It was a standout year for rugby on the domestic front also as Leinster charged their way to a first-ever domestic and European double winning the PRO 14 title and the Champions Cup.
Ireland Women’s Hockey Team
A first-ever World Cup final in the history of Irish team sport. The Ireland hockey team took home a silver medal after overcoming all the odds having been ranked 15th out of 16 teams going into the tournament.
