McClenaghan & Connolly Among Nominees For Young Sportsperson 2019

World bronze medallist Rhys McClenaghan has once again been shortlisted for the RTÉ Young Sportsperson of the Year award.

McClenaghan collected the gong in 2018 having won gold on the pommel horse at the European Championships and 2019 brought more success for the Down man as he became the first Irish gymnast to medal at the World Championships, claiming a bronze medal.

During the championships, McClenaghan also booked his place on Team Ireland at the 2020 Olympic Games in Toyko.

Fellow athletes nominated this year are Rhasidat Adeleke, who won double gold in the 100m and 200m at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Baku, and Sarah Healy, who won the silver medal at the European Athletics Under-20 Championships in Sweden over 1,500m.

Eighteen-year-old Kate O’Connor from the Dundalk won the heptathlon silver medal at the European Athletics Under-20 Championships in Sweden, also receives a nomination.

Having made his international senior debut and his first Premier League start for Brighton & Hove Albion, Aaron Connolly is among those shortlisted. From the world of GAA, Young Hurler of the Year and All-Ireland club medallist Adrian Mullen is also given the nod.

In rugby,  Munsters Academy Player of the Year and U20 Grand Slam winner Craig Casey is nominated while Nicole Turner is also shortlisted after she claimed the bronze medal at the World Para Swimming Championships in London.

In total, 11 sportspeople are nominated. Darragh Maloney and Joanne Cantwell will present the RTÉ Sport Awards 2019 live on RTÉ One on Saturday 14 December at 9.20pm.

The Sportsperson of the Year award as well as the Young Sportsperson of the Year, Team of the Year and Manager of the Year awards will be presented and there will be a new inductee to the RTÉ Sport Hall of Fame.
