James Wade highlights “surreal” experience after coming out on top in Dublin

James Wade comes out on top in Dublin.

James Wade highlighted the “surreal” experience of being a professional darts player after coming out on top in the Dublin edition of the Cazoo Premier League.

Night 12 of this year’s competition took place in the Irish capital and it was Wade who took the five points awarded to the nightly winners, after beating Michael van Gerwen (6-5), Gerwyn Price (6-1) and Jonny Clayton (6-5).

James Wade hits career best average.

The winner on each night also receives a cool ยฃ10,000 bonus and it was fully deserved for Wade, particularly after that one-sided semi-final v Price, in which he hit a career best average of 114.73.

‘The Machine’ looked to be having fun all night, particularly ahead of the final v Clayton, when he was seen to join in with the crowd’s spine-tingling rendition of Zombie by the Cranberries.

Afterwards, the 39-year-old spoke to Pundit Arena about the atmosphere at the 3 Arena and how it can affect even the best players in the world.

James Wade: “The atmosphere was electric.”

“The atmosphere towards the final was just electric,” Wade said. “To be involved in that kind of chaos, that’s what you work towards your whole career to be involved in.

“When you’re involved in it, you get so nervous and you get so rustled. I can’t even put it into words… you’re playing with the top eight dart players in the world, this is what people don’t understand.

“You’re in the practice room and we’re all mixing it. We can all go 180, 180, 180… everyone in that practice room can hit four or five 180s in a row. They can all hit two treble twenties, five bullseyes, 10 bullseyes in a row at any given moment.

“When you get up on that stage and you’re graced with the best players in the world… it’s quite… surreal, I think is the right word.

“I’m one of the fortunate dart players who has been involved in it and I can be involved with the best dart players in the world. It’s a special time to be involved in darts.”

“I’m really happy.”

The victory of Wade’s second in the Premier League in the space of three weeks and takes him to joint-second on 25 points with Van Gerwen in the table, four behind Clayton in first.

“At times, people like me even get fortunate,” he added, modestly. “I’m far happier than most people in the Premier League at the moment so moving on forwards, I’m happy… really happy… really really happy!”

The smile certainly suggested that this was the case for a man who appears to be enjoying his darts at the moment.

Next up is a trip to Glasgow for night 13 as Wade looks to further secure a top-four finish that will see him qualify for Finals Night in Berlin in June.
