Watch: Phil Mickelson Completely Misses The Ball On The First Hole, Recovers With Some Absolute Genius

No-one explores every inch of the golf course quite like Phil Mickelson.

The three time Masters champion has a penchant for the sublime and the absurd, often one after the other, and this was on full display in his third round at Augusta National.

By virtue of having just made the cut, Mickelson had to tee off early in the thick of the brutal Saturday morning weather that many were fearing. A wayward first drive of the day saw the American’s ball end up under a large overhanging branch.

Phil’s attempt to work his magic and make it further up the 445 yard first hole ended in a very rare ‘whiff’ shot.

He would go on to make a triple bogey 7, prematurely ending any hopes of staging a remarkable comeback for the green jacket.

A comeback in its own right did take place however, despite Mickelson bogeying the second. This remarkable second shot with a driver from the fairway of the par five 8th set up an eagle opportunity, and was quickly followed by an excellent birdie on the next hole, this time reaching the back of the green from the famed pinestraw.

A successful putt from the fringe with a wedge shows why ‘Phil the Thrill’ is best equipped to frequently walk the line between genius and insanity.

The popular former champion is one over for the day and six over in total after 15 holes.
