Watch: “Extremely Proud” Irish Team Collect Their World Cup Silver Medals

Ireland’s incredible journey came to a bittersweet end on Sunday afternoon in London.

Though they were unable to cause a seismic shock against a superb Netherlands team, but getting to a World Cup final when ranked 16th was a remarkable achievement.

It was in that knowledge that the Ireland team collected their runner-up silver medals with massive smiles on their faces, following their 6-0 defeat in sweltering conditions.

They have every right to be massively proud, and player Chloe Watkins echoed that sentiment in speaking to RTÉ after the final.

“It’s funny that you’re disappointed to get a silver World Cup medal but the Dutch were another class today – they’re by far the best in the world for a reason and they deserved the victory,” she said.

“We’re extremely proud of how far we’ve come, we’re extremely proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve represented our country. We’re going accept our silver medals with a smile on our face.”

She admitted that the hectic schedule of three games in four days, including two penalty shootouts, caught up with the team.

For good measure, the hero of those shootouts against India and Spain, Ayeisha McFerran, was named goalkeeper of the tournament.

Many more great days lie ahead for this wonderful team that defied all the odds and almost conquered the world of hockey.
