SBG Ireland Prospect Lauded By MMA Legend After Stunning Win

Sam Slater’s recent performance at Shinobi War 11, a show which was wonderfully subtitled ‘Winter Warfare’, has earned the young SBG Ireland amateur plaudits from former King of Pancrase, ex-UFC heavyweight champion, legendary MMA broadcaster, and the world’s premier online self-defence instructor, Bas Rutten.

Slater needed just 77 seconds to account for Englishman David Jenkins, whom he dropped with a sweet roundhouse kick to the body and finished with a barrage of grounded strikes at the Deeside Leisure Centre in Queensferry, Wales at the beginning of the month.

On Thursday, knowing Rutten’s fondness for liver shots, Slater’s coach John Kavanagh drew the Dutchman’s attention to a Fight Lab produced highlight package of the fight, writing, “even the legendary @BasRuttenMMA would have to appreciate this liver kick from SBG’s Sam Slater.”

Rutten, however, was impressed by more than merely Slater’s coup de grace.

“Not only the liver kick, but his distance is freaking awesome as well John,” wrote Rutten. “Looks great!”

“You may as well retire now Sam, it’s not going to get better than this,” wrote Kavanagh in response.

Clare native Slater has had a lengthy amateur career, compiling an 11-3 record according to Fight Lab, and has represented Ireland at two international competitions. He won two fights at the IMMAF European Open Championships in Wolverhampton in 2015 before dropping a decision in the quarter finals and he picked up one win at the IMMAF World Championships in Bahrain last month before once again losing on the scorecards. In both those tournaments, however, Slater was competing up at welterweight, whereas his greatest success has come down at lightweight. There he has claimed titles in both the Clan Wars and UK Fighting Championships promotions. Slater’s fight with Jenkins was his first down at featherweight.

In October Slater told the Irish Examiner that he would ultimately like to turn pro and has his sights set on the UFC.
