Cody Garbrandt heads into UFC 207 and his first crack at a world title with a pristine professional record in tow.
The 25-year-old Team Alpha Male representative has had 10 fights in the paid ranks and he has scored 10 victories, 9 of which came inside the distance.
However, Garbrandt has tasted defeat inside the cage. According to the MMA records database at Tapology, he was actually beaten twice in the amateurs. The first loss came by submission, while the second came via brutal third-round knockout.
That second setback is one that has been brought up on several occasions during the build up to his fight with mind games-expert Dominick Cruz. The defending bantamweight champion posted a clip of the KO to Instagram at Thanksgiving and during the pair’s heated back-and-forth at UFC on Fox 22 a couple of weeks ago, Cruz claimed that Garbrandt’s chin is “nice and weak” before repeatedly asking Cody ‘No Love’ how many times he has been knocked out.
Garbrandt’s response was to claim that Cruz has “pillow fists”.
Cruz certainly isn’t a noted puncher, having only scored 7 KO/TKO wins in his 23-fight career and only 3 in the 13 wins that have followed his only professional loss to Urijah Faber in 2007.
Still, it’s worth mentioning that the man who knocked Garbrandt stiff back in February 2012, Jerrell Hodge, doesn’t have a reputation for carrying punching power either. Of the 16 wins, amateur and pro, attributed to him at Tapology, only 2 came by way of KO/TKO.
Maybe Garbrandt’s jaw isn’t lined with the same granite that’s in his fists.
