CM Punk makes his UFC and indeed his MMA debut on Saturday night in Cleveland, Ohio, when he takes on undefeated 24-year-old Mickey Gall.
The ‘hardcore’ MMA fans among you might scoff and say ‘Who cares?’ But we find it hard to believe that there isn’t a little bit of excitement or intrigue buried deep down inside even the most cynical of observers.
No, he probably shouldn’t have been signed by the promotion when he had no experience whatsoever. Yes, he got the opportunity because of the fame that he had accumulated during his time as one of those ‘phony’ WWE guys. And yes, there are hundreds of guys that are more deserving of a place on this stage.
Regardless, his is a captivating, interesting and yes, I’ll say it, inspirational tale.
This is a guy who was earning very good money doing what he was doing, but he chose to leave it all behind to chase a new dream. A crazy, crazy dream that could easily turn into a nightmare.
You can’t fault Phil Brooks for courage.
Added to the appeal of that backstory however, is the fact that he is a completely unknown commodity. We could witness a complete car crash or something else entirely.
Anyway, the Chicago native finished up his training camp at Roufusport MMA Academy in Milwaukee over the last few days and the UFC Embedded team were on hand to document proceedings.
Also included in this opening episode of the UFC 203 incarnation of the vlog series is a look at the final preparation of UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic.
Miocic shocked the world by starching Fabricio Werdum earlier in the year and he has been rewarded with the opportunity to defend his title before a hometown crowd in Cleveland on Saturday night. In the opposite corner will be feared Dutch striker Alistair Overeem.
This is a real puncher vs puncher match-up that will make for edge of the seat viewing.
