Watch: Mickey Gall Chokes CM Punk Into Submission At UFC 203

The temptation to introduce this piece by saying that the CM Punk experiment has ended in failure is almost irresistible, but the former WWE superstar’s post-fight interview with Joe Rogan suggests that this experiment is far from over.

What we can say however, is that Punk, real name Phil Brooks, was beaten in his MMA and UFC debut on Saturday night in Cleveland at UFC 203.

Punk found himself on his back within a matter of seconds and from there the 37-year-old debutant never looked out of danger for a even the briefest of moments. His opponent, Mickey Gall, was all over him, landing punches and shifting position in an attempt to set up the submission. It wasn’t long before Gall took the Roufusport fighter’s back and locked in a rear-naked choke after just two minutes and fourteen seconds of the very first round.

With the win, Gall moved to 3-0 as a professional.

In his post-fight interview, the 24-year-old welterweight called out fellow high-profile youngster Sage Northcutt in between words of respect for his courageous victim.

In his chat with the aforementioned Rogan, Punk assured fans that his MMA adventure wasn’t at an end, before delivering a motivational speech worthy of the cheesiest 1980’s teen movie…and we don’t mean that in a derogatory sense.

On Twitter, the vast majority of observers shared Gall’s sentiment and expressed respect for the valiant yet defeated Punk.
