Mayweather Rates McGregor’s Power Following Las Vegas Super-Fight

In the lead-up to Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr., many wondered if the Irishman’s vaunted punching-power would translate from the octagon to the boxing ring, or, more specifically, from the four-ounce MMA mitts to the eight-ounce boxing gloves.

Given Mayweather’s elusive nature and McGregor’s inexperience with the heavier gloves, some suggested that the question would never be truly answered.

“Let me tell you what’s going to happen, Conor McGregor will not land a single punch on Floyd Mayweather,” claimed HBO and ESPN boxing analyst Max Kellerman before the fight. “Not one punch.”

Kellerman, and so many others, were proven wrong on Saturday night, however, as McGregor managed to land some 111 punches on the defensive maestro in a little more than nine rounds. That’s 30 punches more than Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao landed on Mayweather in twelve rounds back in May of 2015 , despite the fact that Pacquiao and McGregor threw an almost identical number of punches.

Mayweather then, had ample opportunity to sample the power that accounted for so many in the UFC featherweight and lightweight ranks.

“He caught me with a couple of good shots,” said boxing’s former pound for pound number one when asked about the Dubliner’s power late last night. “He is not a heavy-hitter like most fighters I’ve faced but he packs a pretty good punch.”

Mayweather, who has fought seriously concussive punchers like Diego Corrales, Phillip Ndou, Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, Miguel Cotto as well as the aforementioned Pacquiao in the past and has always possessed an underrated chin, reiterated a point made by former McGregor sparring partner Paulie Malignaggi, who claimed that the McGregor does not possess the “wow power” that many believed.

McGregor may have had more success than most within the boxing community anticipated, but the Dubliner still fell short against Mayweather, succumbing to a sustained barrage of punches in the tenth round.
