It was announced last night that Conor McGregor will fight Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title at UFC 205. The Notorious Irishman will throw down with the 155lb champion in a bid to become the first ever fighter to hold two belts simultaneously within the promotion.
The Dubliner will not return to the featherweight division immediately, and is bidding for history.
Nobody in the game can quite sell a fight like McGregor. Some of his greatest moments have come in press conferences, and we’re expecting fireworks tonight.
His previous press conferences with Jose Aldo, Rafael Dos Anjos and most notably Nate Diaz have produced some memorable moments, and it all adds up to increased interest in the fights.
UFC 205 promises to be the biggest card of the year as far as viewership and pay-per-views are concerned, and now that McGregor is headlining, those numbers are set to sky-rocket.
The press conference can be viewed here, starting at 11pm Irish time:
While this is a fight that made sense for Conor McGregor, Eddie Alvarez and the UFC, there are some left frustrated with the match-up. José Aldo and Khabib Nurmagomedov are left fuming as they must wait for their due title shots at featherweight and lightweight respectively.
