Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson had their first UFC 209 staredown on Thursday afternoon at a media day for the pay-per-view event.
The two 155 lbs contenders head into the bout on 8 and 9 fight win streaks in the UFC and will battle for a lightweight interim title on the 4th of March. It is one of the most highly anticipated lightweight bouts of the year with the winner slated to face Conor McGregor as soon as he returns from his ongoing career break.
The bout took some time to get booked as there were several issues in negotiations, particularly with Ferguson’s contract. Apparently, the American wanted to receive equal pay for the fight, with Khabib currently on a better contract.
It had looked like it was all falling apart when the UFC confirmed that Jose Aldo had been offered an interim fight against Khabib. However, it seems that the MMA promotion were eventually able to find some middle ground with Ferguson and the fight was booked.
