Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee clash tonight in the main event of UFC 216 with the interim lightweight title on the line.
Perhaps more importantly than taking home the interim strap, a giant leap towards the top of the queue of fighters waiting for the next crack at Conor McGregor and the lucrative payday which comes with it will be made by the winner. McGregor has declared this past week that he intends on defending his 155 lbs belt in his next move.
Ahead of the bout, there has been no shortage of drama this fight week.
Lee initially missed weight, coming in one pound over the championship limit at 156 lbs which put the title fight in jeopardy. Thankfully for the event as a spectacle and competition, in a year full of letdowns for the UFC with failed weight cuts, late withdrawals and failed drugs tests, the 25-year-old weighed in under the limit and ready to fight at his second attempt.
Ferguson is the fighter who has all the experience heading into tonight’s showdown. He currently holds the longest winning streak in the history of the UFC lightweight division with nine consecutive W’s.
Backstage after yesterday’s weigh-ins the fighters crossed paths while Lee was fulfilling some media duties.
As ‘El Cucuy’ approaches with his team surrounding him, Lee disregards his interview and barricades his opponent with a verbal onslaught before moving in on Tony.
