Newry’s Damien “The Rage” Rooney had a tough task in front of him tonight as he took on BAMMA featherweight champion Tom Duquesnoy in the Frenchman’s bantamweight debut.
The 22-year-old Duquesnoy trains at arguably the best MMA gym in the world, Jackson-Wink in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and he is among the best European fighters plying their trade outside of the UFC.
The last time that BAMMA staged a show in Dublin, Duquesnoy scored a split decision win over Manchester’s Brendan Loughnane. It was close, and some would say controversial, but on this visit to the Irish capital the once-beaten Parisian was far more convincing.
He crushed Rooney, who also has losses to Irish UFC stars Paddy Holohan and Neil Seery, in just 1 minute and 22 seconds.
Duquesnoy backed Rooney into the cage with with a vicious barrage of shots, a left hook and a straight-right both connecting hard against the County Down fighter’s jaw. Once he saw that he had Rooney somewhat wobbled, “Fire Kid” really went for the kill. A knee to the body and a right-hand were followed by another brutal left-hook that landed flush on the chin, wrecking the Team Torres fighter.
