Prior to UFC 205, the vast majority of MMA fighters and pundits seemed to think that Eddie Alvarez would easily dismiss Conor McGregor at Madison Square Garden.
Although the numbers picking against the Irishman were not as high as they were prior to UFC 202, the 28-year-old still proved a huge number wrong last Saturday night.
Speaking after his rematch with Nate Diaz, McGregor highlighted the fact that so many had predicted a defeat for the Irishman and dared them to doubt him going forward.
‘Every single person doubted me.’ Conor said. ‘Every single fighter doubted me. Doubt me now.’
If McGregor actually thought that a win over Diaz would silence his critics however, he was sorely mistaken. Heading into UFC 205, a huge number of MMA pundits and fighters picked Alvarez to win and, since Saturday, many are now already claiming that the Irishman is ‘ducking’ Khabib Nurmagomedov.
It seems whatever McGregor does, he will always have critics to keep proving wrong. For now however, he can at least bask in the glory of becoming the first simultaneous two division champion in the history of the UFC.
