The speculation surrounding a boxing match between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. has dominated headlines over the past number of weeks. While some are confident the bout will go ahead sometime this year, others are refusing to buy into the hype.
Amongst the latter group is Gunnar Nelson, training partner and close friend of McGregor, who is adamant the rumoured bout is not in the works for 2016 and that both parties are doing nothing more than hyping the fight.
“They’re definitely hyping it up, both of them,” Nelson said on Submission Radio (via MMAnews). “Both of them are taking part in it. So I think they will definitely like to build it up, build up the money and make it happen at some point, but I don’t know how it works with the UFC and the contracts.
“Like, they’d have to make some deal with them and include them somehow, cause most of us know how the UFC deals are and you can’t really just go off and do a super-fight with Floyd Mayweather if you’re signed with the UFC. But yeah, we’ll definitely see how things go. I definitely don’t think it’s gonna happen September or whenever they said.
“And I don’t think (the fight will happen on) New Year’s either. They’re just putting dates and stuff like that (because) it will just hype the whole thing and just keep hyping until they will get a few hundred million or whatever.”
The Icelandic warrior bounced back from his loss to Demian Maia at UFC 194 in spectacular fashion last month, showing his honed ground game to outclass Albert Tumenov at UFC Fight Night: Rotterdam.
Speaking about when he’ll jump back into the octagon, Nelson said he is eyeing a return sometime around September or October later this year.
“Yeah I’d like to return this fall. This summer I’m gonna spend a lot of time with my boy. His Mum is going to go abroad; she’s doing some projects in Berlin. So I will be spending a lot of time with him this summer.”
“So I’d like maybe this fall. I don’t know exactly what cards are on, but I would be aiming for a little summer vacation or spend some time here (at home in Iceland). I’m always training.”
As for McGregor, he’s currently without an opponent or an event to train towards, with slight rumours pointing towards a welterweight showdown with Nate Diaz at UFC 202.
