Watch: Golovkin’s Coach Calls McGregor A ‘Mutt’, Viciously Slams Mayweather Fight

Those involved in the highly-anticipated middleweight showdown between Gennady Golovkin and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on September 16th continue to sling mud at the Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight.

Alvarez’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya has been vociferous in his criticism of the cross-codes match-up for months now, despite previously suggesting he would be happy to promote a bout between UFC lightweight champion McGregor and his ginger Mexican superstar. Boxing’s former ‘Golden Boy’ even went as far as to pen an open letter to boxing fans, calling for them to boycott McGregor – Mayweather, which takes place three weeks before Golovkin vs Alvarez, at the same venue, and has the potential to sap some revenue from the admittedly more legitimate contest.

Golovkin and Alvarez themselves have also slated the rival fight, with the Kazakh puncher calling it a “funny show” during a recent interview with Luke Thomas. That’s what passes for trash-talk from the constantly smiling ‘GGG’, the world’s friendliest rampaging concussion distributor.

However, Golovkin’s trainer, Abel Sanchez, was far more cutting in his assessment of the fight in a recent interview with FightHype. The coach who is responsible for blending Golovkin’s technically superior Eastern European amateur style with a more professional ‘Mexican style’, as Golovkin himself calls it, even branded McGregor a “mutt”.

“It’s a farce. It’s an amateur against one of the greatest fighters of our era,” said Sanchez. “If Maidana, Castillo, Berto, all these names that Mayweather has fought couldn’t touch him, how is this mutt going to touch him?”

Asked if he feels that the fight is disrespectful to boxing, Sanchez answered, “Absolutely”.

“It hurts boxing, it doesn’t hurt our fight. It hurts boxing. And the people are going to see that it shouldn’t have been made. But Mayweather does what he wants.”

Regardless of how much vitriol Golovkin and Alvarez camp’s spew, however, McGregor vs Mayweather will happen and it is guaranteed to rake in the cash.
