Ariel Helwani has long been regarded as one of the finest reporters in MMA circles and his coverage of the upcoming Mayweather vs. McGregor superfight has been impeccable.
Last night, following the final pre-fight press conference between the fighters, Helwani proved why he is the best in the business.
Earlier this week, Floyd Mayweather made everyone aware that he will be spending every night of this entire fight week at his personally owned strip club, or gentlemens club, as he prefers to call it – Girl Collection.
Well, the MMAFighting.com journalist waited up at that venue all night after the subdued presser in the MGM Grand to catch a glimpse of Floyd. In doing so, six hours into his wait for the undefeated 40-year-old he got more than he bargained for.
Mayweather turned up at 4 a.m and felt obliged to sit down with Ariel and give him an interview, just 48 hours before the biggest fight in combat sports history.
What ensued was intriguing. ‘Money’ made some strong claims that McGregor is under severe pressure to make the 154 lbs weight limit for the bout on Saturday night. Although the Irishman has never missed weight in any of his 24 professional MMA fights to date, his opponent has claimed that sources close to the UFC champion’s camp have suggested that he will be in need of IV drips to plummet in weight before the weigh-in.
In another moment during the interview, Floyd puts Helwani in check, insisting that he didn’t have to do the interview with him after Ariel probes Mayweather on the legitimacy of his legacy. ‘Money’ took it as a loaded question and snapped at Ariel who he felt was representing Conor and the world of MMA.
