In combat sports, the undefeated ‘0’ is one of the most sought-after attributes among fight promoters.
To be able to announce a fighter as ‘undefeated’ draws another level of intrigue to a matchup with fans keen to set their eyes on a rising great either adding to their record or suffering their first loss. In 2017, five undefeated UFC brawlers left their ‘o’s’ behind them.
In November of 2017, Mickey Gall took on Randy Brown with a record of 4-0 only for the 26-year-old to see his undefeated record in tatters after Brown dominated the bout and took the decision on all three judges’ scorecards.
Also fighting at UFC 217, Cody Garbrandt headed into the main event with an undefeated professional record of 11-0. However, after knocking down and almost finishing his opponent in the very first round, Garbrandt’s air of invincibility was evaporated in the second as TJ Dillashaw KO’d his former teammate.
The undoubted fight of the year also saw a major name suffering his first professional defeat as Justin Gaethje was brutally finished by Eddie Alvarez at UFC 218. Heading into the bout, the 29-year-old had a frightening record of 18-0.
