This weekend, the UFC returns to Madison Square Garden for the first time since it’s historic debut at the hallowed New York venue 12 months ago.
Last November, Conor McGregor topped the bill and destroyed Eddie Alvarez to become the first man to hold UFC titles in two weight divisions simultaneously, Tyron Woodley retained his welterweight title after a dramatic draw with Stephen Thompson, Joanna Jedrzejczyk maintained possession of her women’s strawweight title with a win over countrywoman Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and Yoel Romero starched Chris Weidman with his usual brand of super-athletic violence. Elsewhere on the card, there were wins for Khabib Nurmagomedov and Frankie Edgar.
It may not possess quite the same star power as it’s predecessor and it certainly hasn’t drummed up the same amount of hype, but Saturday’s UFC 217 is another stacked card.
In the main event, Michael Bisping defends his middleweight title against returning former welterweight king and pound for pound stalwart Georges St-Pierre in a fight that has been nine months in the making. While on the undercard bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt defends against former teammate turned bitter rival T.J. Dillashaw, queen Joanna returns to MSG to defend against Rose Namajunas and Stephen Thompson meets Jorge Masvidal in a mouth-watering welterweight clash.
With just days remaining before the show, the UFC have released the first episode of their UFC 217 Embedded vlog series to whet the appetite. In it, Bisping busts out some impressions, St-Pierre works with legendary boxing coach Freddie Roach, Cody Garbrandt chills with his Team Alpha Male bros, T.J. Dillashaw chows down, Rose judges a fancy dress competition and Joanna gets in a cardio session.
