We are just over two weeks away from what is being dubbed the biggest fight in combat sports history.
Mayweather vs. McGregor in the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas on August 26 is an event that the entire world will stop to watch.
What should we expect to unfold on fight night? When all the talking, promoting and previewing is done and the hype surrounding the monumental event is stripped back, Conor and Floyd will step into the ring to throw down.
As UFC President Dana White put it:
“This will be the biggest fight in the history of two people punching each other.”
Why has this bout captured the imagination of the world?
For starters, both competitors are right up there with the greatest self promoters of all time. One need not look any further than the unprecedented worldwide press tour that the fighters embarked on, converting the cities of Los Angeles, Toronto, New York and London across a four day promotional binge as evidence for how much interest this bout has garnered long before its official announcement.
Another key factor in this storyline is the tale of McGregor. Following his meteoric rise from claiming social welfare in Dublin to being one half of the most lucrative events in sporting history. The fight is touted to smash the all-time record for pay-per-view buys and to revenue in excess of $1 billion.
The UFC lightweight champion will make his professional boxing debut against the undefeated pound for pound king who seeks to extend his perfect record to 50-0, widely regarded as the greatest defensive boxer to ever lace up the gloves. On paper, it is an uphill battle, to put it lightly, from the outset for McGregor.
However, if there is ever an athlete that we should be hesitant to doubt, it is the Irishman. Going by what he has achieved in MMA circles and the meteoric fashion in which he has done so, would it really be wise to absolutely rule out the prospect of the 29-year-old shocking the world on August 26?
