Dana White has suggested that Conor McGregor will do something very different once his Madison Square Garden bout with Eddie Alvarez is out of the way.
In the build up to Tuesday night’s UFC 205 press conference, Dana White had stated on several occasions that, if Conor McGregor did not defend his featherweight title in his next fight, he would be forced to relinquish the 145 lbs crown.
“Conor has to defend his title or make a decision to give it up… If I were Conor, I’d defend my title.” Dana White
At the same time, McGregor himself was making it abundantly clear that he was entirely unwilling to surrender the belt as he was determined to become the first man to reign supreme in two UFC divisions simultaneously.
“I don’t think they’re gonna strip me of the belt. They want to give my belt to the guy I knocked out in 13 seconds and bury that division in the prelims?” Conor McGregor
As it transpired, the ‘Notorious’ Irishman got his way. McGregor will fight Eddie Alvarez in New York on Novemeber 12th and, in the meantime, he will remain as the 145 lbs champion. But at what cost?
As a result of being overlooked once again for a rematch with Conor McGregor, Jose Aldo has announced his intention to be released from his UFC contract and has even stated that he plans to retire from the sport of MMA completely.
Khabib Nurmagomedov has also posted several rants on social media claiming that he was simply a pawn in the McGregor vs Alvarez negotiations despite the fact that he is currently the number one contender in the lightweight division.
Speaking to WFAN’s Outside The Cage podcast, Dana White has now stated that there was a rather intriguing reason behind the company giving McGregor what he wanted.
‘Listen, I battled this thing forever. Not only is it not fair to Jose Aldo, it’s not fair to Khabib and Max Holloway. So, believe me, I battled with this thing but there are… how can I say this? There are other circumstances involved in this that will be played out after the fight.
It’s something completely out of left field but it’s Conor’s business, it’s not mine, and I’ll let Conor announce it when he’s ready to.’
