UFC president Dana White has been at war with Demetrious Johnson over the past week. His latest statements are unlikely to ease tensions as he claimed Conor McGregor is the pound for pound number one, not Demtrious Johnson.
Both White and Johnson have been dominating the headlines in the MMA world all week, with Johnson claiming that White and other UFC officials have been bullying him.
The claims arose from Dana White’s attempts to force ‘Mighty Mouse’ to fight TJ Dillashaw. DJ however has no interest in fighting Dillashaw and instead wants to fight flyweight contender Ray Borg.
As is usually the case with any UFC story, Conor McGregor’s name has eventually made it’s way into the dispute. UFC president Dana White stated that Conor’s willingness to fight anybody at any weight made him the pound for pound number one.
“The media claims he’s the pound for pound best fighter in the world. I think Conor McGregor is the pound for pound best fighter in the world.
If you look at what that really means, what pound for pound means. Conor doesn’t give a sh*t. He’ll fight anybody anywhere anytime. And if Demetrious is the pound for pound best guy in the world, fight TJ Dillashaw.”
When questioned as to whether claims he would shut down the flyweight division should DJ not accept the fight, White was quick to rubbish the claims.
Instead he says that the UFC have been discussing shutting down the division for a number of years. The UFC president says he never used the action as a threat.
“That’s not true. We’ve been talking about shutting down the flyweight division for about three years.
I think that’s what he was saying, because he knows that. He knows that we talked about, you know, doing away with that division, it had nothing to do with Demtrious.
Never once did I threaten him, that’s not, ya that’s not true, that’s not what happened. I told him that we had been talking about shutting down the division for years. He knows that.”
