Watch: When Conor McGregor Openly Challenged Floyd Mayweather To A Fight

Will they? Won’t they?

The Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather rumour that has been circulating over the past few days currently has the world of combat sports gripped in a state of heightened anticipation.

Asked about the story that has MMA and boxing fans alike on the edge of their seats at present, #4 ranked pound for pound boxer in the world Andre Ward summed up the general consensus with regard to the potential bout perfectly as he stated;

‘Is it real? No. But if it was real, I would watch it.’

Although the story seems to have come out of nowhere, in reality, Floyd and Conor have been talking about each other for some time now. In fact, it was ‘Money’ who initially sparked some controversy between the pair earlier this year as he suggested that McGregor’s success was proof that racism still exists.

“They say he (McGregor) talks a lot of trash and people praise him for it, but when I did it, they say I’m cocky and arrogant. So biased! Like I said before, all I’m saying is this, I ain’t racist at all, but I’m telling you racism still exists.”

McGregor took to Facebook in response to Mayweather’s comments and, in an epic rant which ranged from cruising with an air soft pistol to being receiving the 2015 fighter of the year award, the featherweight champion fired several shots at the undefeated boxer before calling him out for a fight.

Floyd Mayweather, don’t ever bring race into my success again. I am an Irishman. My people have been oppressed our entire existence. And still very much are. I understand the feeling of prejudice. It is a feeling that is deep in my blood.

In my family’s long history of warfare there was a time where just having the name ‘McGregor’ was punishable by death.

Do not ever put me in a bracket like this again.

If you want we can organise a fight no problem.

I will give you a fair 80/20 split purse in my favour seen as your last fight bombed at every area of revenue.

At 27 years of age I now hold the key to this game.

The game answers to me now.

This wasn’t the first time McGregor openly expressed an interest in taking on McGregor. Speaking on Conan, the Irish mixed martial artist said last year that he would jump at the opportunity to take on Mayweather in a boxing fight.

‘If you’re asking me if I would like to fight Floyd, I mean who would not like to dance around the ring for 180 million dollars? It would be something that appeals to me very much.

I certainly know he would not want to step into my world. The world of pure unarmed combat where there are no limitations. But I most certainly would step into his world. I would certainly box him if that opportunity arose. Most certainly.’

McGregor’s words certainly give great insight into what his current train of thought may be. If the opportunity has truly arose, UFC contract bound or not, it seems the Irishman will do everything in his power to get this one set up.
