Conor McGregor was initially scheduled to take on Jose Aldo for the featherweight title at UFC 189. However, after the Brazilian withdrew from the contest with a bruised rib, Chad Mendes stepped in on just two weeks notice.
McGregor headed into the bout as favourite with many believing that Mendes’ two week camp would simply prove to be too little time to prepare for an opponent of Conor’s caliber.
However, some had also suggested that McGregor would struggle with the wrestling ability of the powerful American and, when the contest eventually got underway, that was certainly the case.
Mendes brought the SBG man to the mat on several occasions in the two round fight with Chad undoubtedly ahead on the judges’ scorecards before McGregor rallied at the end of the second.
Having been battered with elbows on the ground for the majority of the round, the ‘Notorious’ Irishman showed great skill in evading a submission attempt from Mendes and eventually brought the fight back to its feet.
From there, McGregor spotted that his opponent was tiring and immediately dropped a gear. Going after Mendes, McGregor landed multiple strikes before ‘that left hand shot’ eventually found the American’s chin and sent him plummeting to the canvas.
