Justin Gaethje scored an absolutely spectacular KO to successfully defend his WSOF lightweight title last night in Phoenix, Arizona.
Though Gaethje’s name is not well known outside of the most hardcore MMA fans, he has the potential to capture the imaginations of a casual audience. The 26-year-old, who goes by the nickname “The Highlight”, is currently 15-0, with 12 of those wins coming by way of KO/TKO. He is powerful, aggressive and exciting to watch.
Gaethje scooped the title in March when he stopped Carlos Palomino in the third round of an absolutely scintillating scrap.
In the first defence of his newly acquired gold, Gaethje once again faced the Peruvian, and predictably the pair put on another stunning show.
The sequel ended in the second round when, amidst a typically intense exchange, Gaethje landed a monstrous right hand that robbed Palomino of his consciousness in an instant. Strangely, it seemed that his slumber was interrupted by the first couple of follow-up strikes, as he began to move again for a few moments. He was, however, bombarded with punches and the referee had no choice but to dive in and make the save.
Keep an eye out for Gaethje because he seems determined to live up to that nickname of his.
