An eagle-eyed MMA fan has spotted a strange reaction from UFC owner, Frank Fertitta, during the brutal closing moments of the featherweight title unification fight between Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo at UFC 194.
In the background, during one of the slow motion replays of the knockout, a seemingly angry Fertitta can be seen hoisting the title belt above his head and subsequently slamming it down.
But why on earth would the continued success of the company’s biggest star inspire such a reaction in one of the men who stands to gain the most from it? Is it simply that Fertitta’s emotions are being misread? Or is it something more?
The footage has all of the conspiracy theorists in the online MMA community going wild.
The most prominent theory being discussed, however, is that McGregor’s recent money demands have caused tension between he and the UFC’s higher-ups.
Rumours of a rocky relationship between the parties emerged in the aftermath of McGregor’s claims on the 300th episode of The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani that he was intent on securing a massive new contract. “Nine figures I’m talking”, said the Dubliner. “Nobody in the game has talked nine figures”.
Is it possible that the company brass are worried that McGregor is getting get too big for them to handle?
Others are speculating that the man Conor affectionately refers to as “uncle Frank” simply lost a big wager on the bout with his brother, Lorenzo.
We are holding our judgement until we hear Chael Sonnen’s theory on the matter.
