“One king gets old, then a young gorilla comes up and kills him, and takes everything he owns” – Conor McGregor.
Conor McGregor absolutely loves his dramatic metaphors, and if they can feature a wild animal – that’s even better. This one, however, seems particularly apt. After all, Aldo has been the monarch of the 145lb division for a long time now, and his inability to compete as scheduled at UFC 189 only serves to strengthen the argument that the Brazilian is ready to be replaced at the top of the pecking order.
Given the the theme of Conor’s most prominent piece of body art, a gorilla wearing a crown, there is probably no need to explain where he fits into this tale.
This seems to be the theme of the latest UFC promo for the long-awaited clash. It opens by reminding us of just how great Aldo has been over the last decade, before introducing the brash antics and sensational skills of the emerging McGregor with the above quote.
It’s spine-tingling stuff.
In less than a month we will get to see if McGregor’s metaphorical prediction becomes a prophesy – the latest in a long line from “Mystic Mac” – or whether the king will continue to reign.
